Articulated Side Bars for Knee Orthoses

The articulated side bars for knee orthoses from FIOR & GENTZ contain orthotic joints that have been designed specifically for the production of custom-made knee orthoses. A knee orthosis is a supportive orthosis and is placed on the lower leg and thigh. It only includes the knee joint. The abbreviation KO, which is also commonly used in German, derives from the English term knee orthosis.

The range of FIOR & GENTZ articulated side bars consists of orthotic joints for the indications ACL (injury to the anterior cruciate ligament), PCL (injury to the posterior cruciate ligament), gonarthrosis, hyperextension, varus deformity and valgus deformity.

Our articulated side bars feature two axes that are connected to each other via a gear segment. Such orthotic joints are also called gear segment joints or gear segment side bars. When flexing and extending the knee, the anatomical knee joint does not rotate around a fixed centre of the axis, but rather describes a centrode. Due to the biaxial construction of our gear segment joints, the pivot point of the orthosis joints approximately follows the run of the centrode when flexing and extending the knee orthosis. This way, especially in the case of a cruciate ligament injury, a torn cruciate ligament or the surgical reconstruction of the cruciate ligament is protected as best as possible.

You will find detailed information about which articulated side bar is suitable for which clinical picture in our product catalogue "Articulated Side Bars for Knee Orthoses".  In addition to the appropriate materials, we also offer specially developed tools that guarantee the production of a precise negative cast. To ensure the best possible treatment for each patient, we recommend using the FIOR & GENTZ Orthosis Configurator.

A knee orthosis is not suitable as a medical device for indications including paralysis of the muscles of the lower extremities. In this case, we would recommend the orthotic joints in the sections System Ankle Joints and System Knee Joints. These products are designed for the production of an AFO (ankle-foot orthosis) or a KAFO (knee-ankle-foot orthosis), which can withstand higher loads than articulated side bars for knee orthoses.
